I am a self-taught artist living and working in rural New Jersey. I have been been making art for over 30 years. Born into a Brooklyn N.Y. brownstone, I have always had a fascination for living-spaces and spaces that live. The places in which we reside, much like the bodies we inhabit, bear the stains of our existence. The oil of our breath, the dust of our flesh and the echoes of our experiences which survive between coats of paint, paste, paper, and embed into furniture, grooves and crevices, are the fascination and fuel for much of my three dimensional work.
My works on paper are thinly layered transparent watercolor built-up to create synergy of color giving birth to volume. They are as individual as human beings, no two alike. The passage of time and the effects of the ripening process are integral in my paintings. The words of my sister Judith in the following poem, speak to the feelings that impel my work.
cracked
and of your flaws and
foibles – dare i speak?
like fine crazing lines
in the bottom of a
well-loved cup
they distinguish you -
endear you to me…
comfort me as i draw
this next, long
sip of you…
