I am a self-taught artist living and working in rural New Jersey. I have been been making art for over 30 years. Born into a large family in a Brooklyn N.Y. brownstone, I have a fascination for the topography of human relationships, interior living-spaces and the footprint in nature that people and spaces occupy. The stains of existence like the oil of breath and the dust of flesh echo experiences that survive between coats of paint, paste, paper, and embed in grooves and crevices, these are the ripe fodder for my work..
I also explore the ways in which we shape and reshape the nature of the planet, illusions of control and the repetitive yet unpredictable forces of nature itself are the fascination and fuel for much of my painting on canvas and three dimensional work.
My works on paper are thinly layered transparent watercolor built-up to create synergy of color giving birth to volume. They are as individual as human beings, no two alike. The passage of time and the effects of the ripening process are integral to my paintings.
The words of my sister Judith in the following poem, speak to the feelings that impel my work.:
cracked
and of your flaws and
foibles – dare i speak?
like fine crazing lines
in the bottom of a
well-loved cup
they distinguish you -
endear you to me…
comfort me as i draw
this next, long
sip of you…
